If you loved climbing trees as a kid, you’ll absolutely love the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park. Originally built in 1889 by a Scottish civil engineer and land developer George Grant Mackay, the bridge became a popular destination for his adventurous friends. Over time, and after a handful of owners, the bridge grew in popularity. It’s now in the one of the most popular tourist attractions in Vancouver! Here, not only can you test your fear of heights on the suspension bridge (it’s taller than the Statue of Liberty) but you can also spend hours exploring the Cliffwalk, Treetops Adventure, Living Forest and more!
There have been hundreds of articles calling Vancouver the best place in the world to live. After visiting, it’s easy to see why! Their public transportation is affordable and efficient, their streets are clean, it’s easy (and safe) to walk at all hours, and their food is both diverse and on point. Not just that, but locals are some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Since this was such a spontaneous trip we never switched currencies before going downtown, and the local bus driver even gave us a free ride since we only had American cash. We’ve only been here for half of a day, and I’m already calling this one of my favorite cities.
Finally made it to Vancouver! We’re spending this beautiful, rainy day exploring the downtown Vancouver districts. We’ve got our umbrellas, our comfy shoes and our appetites! Let’s do this!
Our last stop in America was a visit to Deception Pass Bridge. We hiked down the side of the mountain to get a closer look at the tide pools at the bottom, and on the way back to our car, we were treated with an up close view of sea otters playing and a bald eagle enjoying the view! Now, off to Canada!
We made sure to visit Ruby Beach before we headed away from the Washington Coast. We went during high tide so we didn’t get the opportunity to check out the tide pools, but we still had an amazing time making our way over the drift wood and looking for keepsake rocks. After a few days of rain, it was nice to enjoy a nice afternoon at the beach!
As fate would have it, Sean found a perfectly intact sand dollar at Tree of Life beach yesterday! Now we both have our very own sea treasures to take home with us!
The second beach we visited yesterday was beach no. 2 also known as the Tree of Life beach. As it turns out, the best way to access this beach was right from our campground! Nestled between two lookouts, the tree of life has a stream flow from behind it, down to the ocean. Ironically, this beach also had thousands of dead crab and mussel shells covering the beach each morning, as this was a favorite spot for local birds to catch their breakfast. The perfect blend of extreme life and extreme death made this beach a memorable one to visit.
This morning, Sean and I woke up early in order to visit as many beaches on the Washington coast as possible. We kicked off our day by visiting Kalaloch Beach (aka beach #4) at the recommendation of some friends we made the day before. I’ve never seen such a colorful sunrise before, and it was a unique experience watching locals beach fish. What makes this beach super unique, is the tectonic plates that perfectly formed a beach ramp down to the sand. While it took a little more effort to get to and from this beach, the view at sunrise made it all worth it!
One more from yesterday’s rain forest hikes! This one, the Quinault Rain Forest, took us about five hours to hike in full but was totally worth it. We came across multiple waterfalls, wildlife (there are cougars!), and the world’s tallest Douglas fur tree. If hiking isn’t your thing, still stop by if you’re in the area, as there’s a 30 mile loop that you can drive through to explore as well!
