There’s one magical day a year, when airline fares drop 10 to 20 percent. Here’s everything you need to know about Cheap Flight Day 2016!
Mark your calendars! August 23, 2016 is ‘Cheap Flight Day,’ and it’s a date all travelers need to know if they want to save money. According to the airline schedule, August 23rd marks the official start of the fall travel season, and likewise, cheaper flights.
Here’s everything you need to know about cheap flight day.
When: While there can be some slight differences among airlines, most travel companies are expecting to see fight prices drop on August 23rd across the board. This date marks the start of the fall travel season since children are back in school and therefore the demand for travel drops significantly. Airlines know when we want (and don’t want) to fly, and price fares accordingly. With summer trips coming to an end, and holidays quickly approaching, expect most, of not all, airlines to have cheaper flights on this date.
How Long?: While Cheap Flight Day focuses on August 23rd, expect prices to drop from seasonal highs to off-peak lows, and to continue dropping (albeit slowly and selectively) until late October, based on flight demand. Want a hot ticket? Book as close to August 23rd as possible. New Year’s Eve and Christmas flights tend to become expensive shortly after.
How Much?: Depending on departure and destination cities, expect to see fares drop anywhere from 10 to 30 percent.
Which Dates Should I Book?: While flights will generally be cheaper, dates still matter. As a general rule, the cheapest days of the week to fly remain Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays while the most expensive days are Fridays and Sundays. Also, the usual rules for airfare shopping apply; book at least 30 days before you plan to take off for cheapest fare.
Where: Both domestic and international flights will go on sale.
What’s the catch: There is none! With so many people traveling over the summer vacation, many people can’t take time off September-October. If your schedule allows it, these months are not only the cheapest for flights, but for hotels as well.
